 A historia de Full Metal Alchemist mostra a alquimia, que e a ciencia transcedental que estuda a transformacao das coisas. Assim como a magia, que pode fazer coisas aparecerem nos lugares mais absurdos, a alquimia segue a regra de que uma coisa pode ser feita de outra coisa. Como assim? Bem, os personagens de Full Metal Alchemist usam simbolos circulares, chamados “circulos de transmutacaoâ€?, para criar e transformar coisas. Assim, eles podem tirar uma casa de um monte de pedras ou uma espada de uma pilha de metal. Mas como tudo na vida, a alquimia possui uma serie de regras que nao podem ser quebradas, sendo a mais importante a de que tudo deve estar em perfeito equilibrio. E ai que entram os irmaos Edward e Alphonse Elric que perderam sua mae para uma rara doenca e como estudantes de alquimia resolvem tentar traze-la de volta. Eles se arriscam ao tentar fazer a transmutacao humana, uma alquimia que jamais foi feita. E a coisa nao da certo. No acidente, Edward perde seu braco direito e sua perna esquerda, enquanto Alphonse perde sua vida. Ed pensa rapidamente e usando a alquimia transfere o espirito do irmao para uma armadura antiga e no lugar de seus membros, ele ganha partes mecanicas.
